Applying a Ceramic Coating at Home
Years of protection and gloss in an afternoon. A careful, step-by-step guide to DIY ceramic coating.

A ceramic coating chemically bonds to your clear coat, giving months-to-years of protection, serious water beading, and a slick, glossy finish. Prep is everything — the coating locks in whatever is underneath, flaws included.
Prep is 90% of the job
- Wash using the two-bucket method.
- Clay the paint to remove bonded contaminants.
- Polish to remove swirls and maximize gloss.
- Panel wipe with an IPA/prep solution to strip all polishing oils.
⚠ Warning
Apply in a dust-free, shaded area between 60–75°F. Never coat in direct sun.
Applying the coating
- Wrap the applicator block with a suede cloth and add a few drops of coating.
- Work one panel at a time in a cross-hatch pattern (up-down, then left-right).
- Wait for the coating to "flash" (it'll look rainbow/hazy) — usually 1–5 minutes depending on the product and temperature.
- Level it off with a clean microfiber, then buff with a second one.
- Move to the next panel and repeat.
Curing
Keep the car dry and out of the rain for at least 24 hours (check your product's instructions). After that, enjoy water that sheets right off and a wash routine that just got a whole lot easier.
